Converter 2.0, ESXi 8.x source support and concurrent migration

Netframe Converter 2.0 extends source support to ESXi 8.x and adds concurrent VM migration from a single appliance.

By Neon Dynamics Engineering

When we started Netframe, we knew a credible alternative to VMware vSphere needed a credible migration story. Converter 1.x covered ESXi 6 and 7 sources. With 2.0, we extend the picture to ESXi 8.x as a supported source.

This release also lands a number of operational improvements customers have asked for:

  • Concurrent migration. Run multiple VM migrations in parallel from a single Converter appliance. Throughput is bounded by your network and storage.
  • NFS source path. In addition to using an ESXi host as the source (via SSH credentials), Converter can read VMDK and VMX files directly from an NFS volume. Useful when you have datastore access but not host access.
  • Queue management. Stage a list of VMs in advance and run through the queue under operator control.
  • Automatic guest preparation. On supported guest operating systems, VMware Tools is removed and the QEMU Guest Agent is installed as part of the conversion.

Converter remains a free download. There is no per-VM fee, no per-migration fee, and no time limit on use. If you need still more throughput, deploy additional Converter appliances; multiple appliances can run in parallel against the same source environment.
